What is transit?

You purchase goods from a company outside of the European Union and you intend to import these goods into an Eastern European country or Russia. You (or your supplier) organize international air transport to an airport in Europe. Your goods need to be kept in transit and sent on to their final destination by truck over European Union territory or by air transport. In order to achieve this, 2 things have to be organized:

  • The physical logistical process at airports and processing in warehouses.
  • Declaration of the shipment to Customs

The physical logistical process

Following international air transport to a country in the EU, your shipment will be held by a 1st-line handling agent at the airport (e.g. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, The Netherlands). The 1st-line handling agent is the company that loads and unloads airplanes. Your shipment then needs to be released to a forwarder (e.g. J. van de Put). To this end, the shipment has to be cleared or it has to be picked up under the supervision of Customs (T1 transit).

Once your shipment has arrived at the forwarder, it is often the case that some further logistical activities have to be carried out. For instance, a shipment may need to be cooled down if it has arrived at too high a temperature. Or the shipment may have to be loaded onto pallets in accordance with your specifications. Perhaps the shipment will even need to be splitted, consolidated, or orders need to be picked.

Keeping this process on the right track requires a lot of knowledge and expertise. To this end, you are best off using the services of a specialist service provider such as J. van de Put.

Declaration of the consignment to Customs

If you are forwarding goods, then you will have to declare these to Customs. After all, Customs need to be informed that your shipment is being forwarded. A T-1 transit declaration needs to be prepared so that your goods are known to Customs and are kept in transit.

In order to run through the Customs process correctly, J. van de Put posesses all the required knowledge of Customs legislation. All communication systems have been set up so as to achieve smooth completion of Customs formalities. Our specialists are familiar with your products, so they can draw up declarations quickly and correctly.
